Aurora Innovation Targets 500 Self-Driving Trucks With Hirschbach Deal
NEW YORK, April 30 —
Aurora Innovation expanded its Hirschbach partnership to scale autonomous trucks to 500 units, with management projecting hundreds of millions in revenue.
- 500-truck deployment target with Hirschbach, up from a much smaller pilot footprint
- $3mn TTM revenue today against a forward P/E of negative 13.5x at $6.085 a share
- Next data point: deployment pace and the next quarterly commercial-load disclosure
What Actually Happened
Hirschbach, a Dubuque-based reefer carrier, agreed to scale its use of Aurora's Driver platform to 500 autonomous trucks for long-haul freight. Aurora frames the deal as worth hundreds of millions in lifetime revenue, and Wall Street nudged price targets higher in response. The mechanism here matters more than the headline. Aurora monetizes per-mile, not per-truck, so the 500-unit figure is really a proxy for the lane density and utilization Hirschbach is willing to commit on the Dallas-Houston-Phoenix corridor where Aurora's stack is validated.
The Catch
Aurora did $3mn in TTM revenue. Even if the Hirschbach deal converts cleanly into "hundreds of millions" over its life, that is a multi-year ramp against a company currently burning cash at a roughly $200mn-per-quarter pace. The forward P/E of negative 13.5x tells you everything about where the income statement actually sits. Investors have heard the "commercial inflection is next quarter" pitch from autonomy companies before. TuSimple ran the same playbook and ended up delisting.
Bottom Line
This is a real milestone, not a press release dressed up as one. A reefer carrier signing up for 500 trucks is a more credible signal than another OEM integration announcement, because Hirschbach has actual freight to move and a P&L that has to work. But at $6 a share with $3mn of revenue, you are not buying a trucking business. You are buying an option on Aurora hitting deployment milestones before the cash runs out. The number to watch: how many of those 500 trucks are actually on the road by the next earnings call.
