Axon Enterprise Drops 25% on Q3 Miss and $1.2 Billion Drone Bet
NEW YORK, November 6 —
Axon Enterprise, Inc. (AXON) fell 25% after Q3 missed estimates, guidance was cut, and management revealed a $1.2bn Skydio bet.
- Stock down 25% post-Q3; annual revenue growth guidance reduced, with federal drone procurement delays cited as the driver
- 36.4x forward P/E on $3.2bn TTM revenue growing 35.3% YoY, a guidance cut compresses that multiple twice, once on the miss and again on the reduced forward estimate
- Next data point: specific revised full-year revenue guidance range; Q4 2026 earnings date TBD
Federal Drone Delays Stalled Axon's Beat-and-Raise Machine
The gap-down is visible in the chart. The proximate cause, per TradingView's post-earnings summary, was "Federal drone delays", implying the Q3 shortfall was a timing problem, not a demand collapse. A contract that slips from Q3 to Q4 is still a contract. But at 36.4x forward P/E, timing problems get no forgiveness.
Axon's TTM revenue sits at $3.2bn with 35.3% YoY growth. That growth rate is exceptional at this scale. What changed is not the destination but the confidence in delivery, and management's decision to cut annual revenue growth guidance signals they expect the slip to extend beyond this quarter.
$1.2 Billion More Into Skydio Against $222 Million of Annual Free Cash Flow
The timing is the story. The same day Axon reported a quarter hurt by federal drone procurement delays, it announced an additional $1.2bn commitment to Skydio, a drone maker whose primary customer is the federal government. That figure is roughly 5.4x Axon's TTM free cash flow of $222mn.
Reuters used the word "additional," which matters. Axon had already invested in Skydio before this announcement. The company is not diversifying away from the problem; it is amplifying its exposure to the same procurement pipeline that just caused the miss. That is a conviction call, and Wall Street is repricing it in real time.
At 36x Forward P/E, the Multiple Had No Room for a Trim
High-growth multiples compress twice on a guidance cut: once for the near-term miss, and again on the reduced forward earnings estimate. With trailing EPS at $2.41 and the stock priced at 36.4x forward, Axon had been treated as a compounding machine with no slack. That single-session move is consistent with that double-compression dynamic.
Investors who bought this as a government technology story have not been proven wrong yet. The underlying thesis, rising adoption of Axon's body-camera, taser, and drone platform across law enforcement and defense, has not been disproven. The market is demanding a lower entry price to hold that thesis through a procurement cycle that just demonstrated it can delay a quarter.
Q4 Guidance Range Is the Only Number That Settles This
At $382.56, the stock needs clarity, not momentum. The specific revised full-year guidance range will determine whether this selloff was an overreaction to procurement timing or the first repricing in a longer derating cycle.
If Q4 guidance implies reacceleration toward the original trajectory, that selloff becomes a buying event. If it embeds a further step down, the $1.2bn Skydio commitment looks like a capital allocation overhang the multiple cannot yet support. Run your own assumptions through the DCF calculator to stress-test what a range of revised growth rates implies for intrinsic value.
