Bitdeer Up 15% on Data Centers; Debt Load Looms

A 15% stock surge obscures a harder question at Bitdeer Technologies Group (BTDR): whether a company carrying $1.95 billion in debt, operating at a 0.7% gross margin, and having missed earnings estimates four consecutive quarters can credibly pledge $100 million back to shareholders while still tapping markets to fund expansion.

Expansion on Every Front, Profits on None

Bitdeer, a Singapore-headquartered blockchain and high-performance computing company, mines Bitcoin for its own account and sells infrastructure services under the SEALMINER hardware brand, Minerplus management software, cloud hash rate plans, and AI colocation. The Nevada manufacturing facility and the eight-year Malaysian data center agreement for its AI subsidiary extend that footprint across eight territories from Bhutan to Canada. Revenue grew 47.1% year-over-year to $810 million, the expansion is real. But 47% topline growth producing a 0.7% gross margin and trailing EPS of -$2.59 suggests the build-out is consuming every dollar the growth generates, with room to spare on the loss side.

The Buyback Against the Balance Sheet

The $100 million repurchase program arrived alongside a balance sheet that already shows $1.95 billion in debt against $0.46 billion in cash. Earlier this year Bitdeer filed a 424B5 prospectus supplement for a securities offering, then absorbed a 17% stock drop when it announced a $300 million convertible note offering, and separately sold its entire Bitcoin treasury following a new equity raise. Buybacks are a capital-return signal; they carry weight when a company is generating surplus cash. Here, the company did produce $27 million in trailing free cash flow, but against $1.95 billion in debt, a $100 million buyback authorization reads more as a sentiment anchor than a structural commitment. The CFO and Chief Strategy Officer each purchased 25,000 shares in August at $9.04 and $8.84 respectively, a combined $447,000 that at least aligns management with minority holders on the downside.

What Would Change the Picture

The analyst consensus target of $22.14 against a $9.18 stock implies the bull case is real but unpriced, that the AI infrastructure build eventually generates margins the mining business never could. The specific test: whether gross margin expands materially from that level as the Malaysian data center and Nevada facility come online. A move toward double-digit gross margin would validate the capital-intensive strategy; another quarter below 2% alongside further equity or debt issuance would confirm the bears, who already hold 33.4% of the float short. An erroneous facility capacity figure that Bitdeer asked investors to disregard adds a disclosure wrinkle worth monitoring.
