The numbers
  • Northland's Buy rating targets $99 against IREN's current $46.68-112% implied upside that JPMorgan endorsed directionally but Goldman Sachs and Rothschild Redburn both declined to match
  • TTM revenue of $707mn fell 26.7% YoY and FCF stands at negative $4.2bn; the $2.8bn backlog converts to cash when contracts deliver, not when they sign
  • Next earnings: AI-segment revenue as a share of total is the single data point that will determine whether institutional confidence converts into rating upgrades

JPMorgan Goes Bullish; Goldman Praises the Setup and Stays Neutral

The disclosure landed clean on paper. JPMorgan moved to a bullish price target; Goldman Sachs lifted its own while specifically citing customer diversification as a constructive signal. Northland added a Buy with a $99 target on a stock sitting at $46.68. Goldman kept its Neutral rating. Rothschild Redburn, initiating coverage on the same news cycle, also landed at Neutral.

Goldman's language is the buried lead. "Lauding" a company's strategic positioning while refusing to upgrade is the institutional equivalent of a standing ovation with arms folded: they see an improving story, not yet a fundable thesis at current prices. When a bulge-bracket analyst praises and stays neutral, what they are actually saying is: show me the revenue.

$2.8bn Is Backlog; the P&L Still Shows a Different Company

IREN generated $707mn in TTM revenue, down 26.7% YoY. FCF clocks at negative $4.2bn. Trailing EPS is negative $2.22 and forward P/E sits at negative 8.9x, consensus does not expect profitability near term. That backlog is a forward book, not cash recognized or earned. The gap-down visible in the chart over the prior quarter reflects exactly this: a company whose current financials have not yet caught up to its pipeline ambitions.

The pivot from Bitcoin mining to AI data center infrastructure is directionally credible; that is precisely why JPMorgan moved. But signed contracts and delivered margin are separated by execution, and that gap is what the neutrals are pricing. To stress-test the backlog-to-value conversion, our DCF calculator lets you run the assumptions yourself.

24.5% Short Float Is the Bet Against Execution

Nearly one in four float shares is short. Short sellers are not betting against the AI market, they are betting that the signed backlog does not automatically translate to profitable operations for a company burning cash at this rate. That is a specific, defensible thesis, and it is also exactly the kind of positioning that makes any sustained institutional re-rating explosive: forced covering amplifies moves that would otherwise fade.

The rally reflects the contract disclosure more than the analyst consensus, because that consensus is split three ways. The 24.5% float short is the variable that makes this stock binary rather than gradual.

Next Earnings: One Revenue Line Settles the Argument

The metric to watch is AI-segment revenue as a share of total. If it trends toward half of IREN's $707mn TTM base within two quarters, the neutral ratings become defensively incorrect and the upgrade cycle continues. If the backlog converts slowly, the short thesis holds and cash burn becomes the dominant narrative.

Goldman's specific callout of customer diversification as the positive signal means the pipeline is not a single-client concentration risk. That is the constructive piece inside a Neutral rating, and the reason JPMorgan landed somewhere more bullish. The number that proves them wrong is whatever AI revenue figure appears on the next earnings call.
