Ouster Surges on Drone News as C-Suite Cashed Out at $34

Six Ouster, Inc. (OUST) executives (CEO through General Counsel) sold shares simultaneously at $33.96 on September 14. Less than three weeks later, the stock jumped 8.6% to $44.39 on reports its lidar sensors are being developed for wildfire-response drones. Whether that sequence is coincidence or signal is the question the $10-per-share gap now forces.

The Coordinated Exit

On a single day in September, every member of Ouster's executive suite filed Form 4s at exactly $33.96: CEO Charles Angus Pacala (30,385 shares, $1.03 million), CFO Kenneth Gianella ($533,000, on top of $1.81 million moved in four August 18 tranches at $44.65 to $47.09), COO Darien Spencer ($435,000, on top of $1.35 million from early August), CTO Mark Frichtl (exercising options at $14.22 in late August before selling a portion at $33.96), CRO Cyrille Jacquemet and General Counsel Megan Chung. No insider bought a share in 90 days. That price now sits more than 30% below today's close.

The Growth-Burn Disconnect

Ouster makes lidar sensors across application tiers: wide-angle OSDome for infrastructure, long-range OS2 for industrial and autonomous vehicle work, and the Velodyne line, acquired and integrated, for surround-view automotive applications. Trailing twelve-month revenue of approximately $200 million is growing 55.9% year-over-year. Below the revenue line, the picture is harder: gross margin of 46.6%, free cash flow of -$57 million, and consecutive EPS misses in the two most recent quarters (after two prior beats) make any DCF model unusually sensitive to the path to profitability. A shelf registration filed July 2026 keeps equity issuance on the table.

What the Drone Thesis Needs to Prove

The wildfire-drone application, Ouster's 3D sensors operating through smoke and shifting terrain, is new territory, and a drone-maker partnership reported October 2 may extend the addressable market into emergency response. The analyst consensus target of $59.40 against today's $44.39 implies upside; GuruFocus assigns a GF Score of 63 out of 100 and calls the stock overvalued, while 9.7% of the float is short. With $260 million in cash against $20 million in debt, Ouster has runway. The next quarterly EPS print, reversing or extending two consecutive misses, determines whether the drone thesis is already priced in. Run the free Ouster, Inc. deep-dive →
