Plug Power Stock Rips 40% on Bloom Energy Halo, Not Its Own Numbers

Plug Power (PLUG) jumped roughly 40% over recent sessions, including a 9% gain on April 29, after an analyst raised his price target and the fuel cell sector rallied.

Plug Power Inc. (PLUG) — stock analysis
The numbers
  • PLUG up ~40% over the period; +9% on April 29 alongside Bloom Energy +23% and FuelCell Energy +32%
  • Stock at $3.145 with a negative 15.3x forward P/E on $710mn TTM revenue
  • Q1 2026 earnings ahead, with cash burn and hydrogen plant ramp the only numbers that matter

What Actually Happened

Bloom Energy posted a blowout quarter. The whole fuel cell complex caught a bid. FuelCell Energy ripped 32%. Plug tagged along for 9% in a single session, helped by a sell-side price target hike days before its own earnings. Plug's order book, cash position, and hydrogen plant economics did not change this week. What changed is that an analyst desk called the sector trade on. A heavily shorted stock with a $3 handle is exactly the kind of name that jumps 40% when shorts cover into a bullish sector print.

The Catch

Bloom sells fuel cells to data centers running on natural gas. Plug sells electrolyzers and green hydrogen. Different unit economics, different customers. The negative 15.3x forward P/E says the Street still expects Plug to lose money on every dollar of that $710mn TTM revenue. A sympathy rally does not fix a gross margin problem. The last time the fuel cell sector ran like this, in early 2021, PLUG round-tripped from $75 to single digits in 24 months.

Bottom Line

This is a momentum trade, not a fundamental one. Growth investors who already own Plug got a free 40% rerate and should think hard about taking it. Value investors have nothing to do here at a negative forward earnings multiple. The next real test is Q1 2026 earnings. If cash burn narrows and the Georgia and Louisiana hydrogen plants show throughput, the rally has legs. If not, the Bloom halo fades fast. Watch the cash burn line.
