What Is a Good Current Ratio?
The current ratio measures how easily a company can cover its short-term obligations with its short-term assets. A higher ratio signals more liquidity buffer; a ratio near or below 1.0 means current liabilities match or exceed liquid assets.
Above 2.0 — Strong liquidity. The company holds at least two dollars of current assets for every dollar owed in the next 12 months. This is comfortable for most operating businesses. Technology and Healthcare companies routinely run above 2.0 because they accumulate cash and have relatively low short-term debt. Caution: a very high ratio (above 4–5) in an industrial business may indicate slow-moving inventory or inefficient working capital management.
1.0 to 2.0 — Healthy for many sectors. Most well-run manufacturers, retailers, and industrial companies operate in this range. Consumer Staples companies intentionally run near 1.0–1.2 by leveraging supplier terms. A ratio in this band is not a concern as long as the business generates consistent cash flow and the composition of current assets (cash vs. receivables vs. inventory) is sound.
Below 1.0 — Sector-dependent. For Utilities and REITs, a ratio below 1.0 is normal and expected — these sectors are financed by long-term capital, and short-term liabilities often include near-term rollovers of long-term debt. For manufacturers or technology companies, a ratio below 1.0 warrants investigation into cash burn, debt maturities, and access to credit lines.

How to Use This Data
1. Benchmark within sector, not across sectors
A Consumer Staples company at 1.1 and a Healthcare company at 1.1 are in very different positions. Staples at 1.1 sits exactly at its sector median — healthy. Healthcare at 1.1 is well below its 3.1 median and may signal a liquidity squeeze or aggressive working capital management. Always compare to the row that matches the company's primary business, not to a universal threshold.
2. Look inside the current assets
Two companies with the same current ratio can have very different liquidity profiles. A ratio of 2.0 backed mostly by cash is far stronger than one backed mostly by slow-moving inventory. Check the balance sheet composition: cash and short-term investments are the most liquid; receivables depend on collection; inventory can take weeks or months to convert. 3. Track the trend alongside the snapshot
A single current ratio tells you where the company stands today; the trend over 4–8 quarters tells you where it is heading. A ratio declining toward 1.0 in a sector where peers are at 1.8 deserves investigation — it can reflect intentional working capital efficiency or early signs of a cash squeeze. A current ratio between 1.5 and 2.5 is generally considered healthy for most operating businesses — it signals the company can cover its short-term obligations with a reasonable liquidity buffer. A ratio above 2.5 is not automatically better: it may indicate excess cash that could be deployed, or slow-moving inventory. Why do Utilities and Real Estate have current ratios below 1.0?
Utilities and REITs routinely run current ratios below 1.0 because of how they are financed. Utilities roll short-term commercial paper and revolving credit constantly as part of normal capital management — the short-term debt shows up as a current liability even though it will be refinanced, not repaid from operating cash. REITs are funded primarily by long-term mortgages and equity, with current liabilities including the near-term portion of long-term debt. For both sectors, solvency is better assessed through interest coverage, credit ratings, and debt maturity profiles rather than the current ratio.
How is the current ratio calculated?
The current ratio equals total current assets divided by total current liabilities, both from the balance sheet. Current assets include cash, short-term investments, accounts receivable, and inventory. Current liabilities include accounts payable, accrued expenses, short-term debt, and the current portion of long-term debt due within 12 months. For example, a company with $500M in current assets and $300M in current liabilities has a current ratio of 1.67. What does a declining current ratio signal?
