How to Read a Dividend History Chart

A dividend history chart plots the total dividends paid per share in each calendar year. Green bars mean the dividend grew vs. the prior year — a sign management is confident in future earnings. Red bars signal a cut or omission, which historically precedes prolonged price weakness and is often the first visible sign of balance-sheet stress.

The 5-year CAGR (compound annual growth rate) tells you how fast the income stream has compounded. A 7–10% dividend CAGR effectively doubles your yield-on-cost every seven to ten years, making reinvestment decisions significantly more valuable for long-hold investors.

The consecutive-raise streak — sometimes called the "dividend aristocrat" count — measures uninterrupted annual increases. Companies with streaks of 10+ years have typically managed the dividend through at least one full business cycle, which provides stronger income stability evidence than yield alone.

Yield history adds another layer: a rising dividend combined with a falling yield means the stock price appreciated faster than the payout, signaling that the market is pricing in continued growth. A rising yield despite stable dividends often means the market has re-rated the stock lower — worth investigating before assuming it is a bargain.
