What is Forward P/E?
The forward price-to-earnings ratio divides the current stock price by the analyst consensus estimate for next-twelve-months (NTM) earnings per share. Unlike the trailing P/E — which looks backward at reported EPS — the forward multiple tells you what investors are willing to pay for expected earnings. That distinction matters: a company with a high trailing P/E can look cheap on a forward basis if earnings are expected to surge.
The practical benchmark is the sector median: Technology stocks routinely trade at 25–30x forward earnings because the market prices in durable growth, while Banking stocks trade at 10–13x because returns are more cyclical and capital-intensive. A stock trading 30% above its sector median NTM P/E is implicitly promising earnings growth that exceeds its peers — miss that estimate and the premium compresses fast. See the full table at Forward P/E by Industry.
For a fuller picture, pair the forward multiple with the PEG ratio (forward P/E divided by estimated EPS growth) and the trailing P/E calculator to see whether the consensus estimate is credible relative to reported history.
