How to Read Annual Revenue Trends

Revenue is the top line of the income statement — the total dollars a company brought in before any costs. Tracking it year by year reveals whether a business is growing, stalling, or contracting. The bars show absolute revenue in dollars; the orange line shows the year-over-year growth rate, which is often where the story turns first.

The CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) card summarizes the full window. A 10%+ CAGR is a meaningful growth business; 3–10% is steady organic grower territory; below 3% suggests the business is maturing or facing structural headwinds. Context matters — compare against the sector average and check whether growth is accelerating or decelerating in the most recent years.

Revenue growth without margin improvement can signal share-buying rather than value creation. Once you have the revenue trend, check whether profits are keeping pace using the DCF calculator, or evaluate the market's implied growth expectations with the reverse DCF calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the revenue history chart show?

It plots up to 10 years of a company's annual total revenue as bars, with a line tracking the year-over-year (YoY) percentage growth for each period. A CAGR summary card shows the compounded annual growth rate across the full window.

How is revenue CAGR calculated?

Revenue CAGR is (latest revenue ÷ earliest revenue)^(1÷years) − 1. For example, revenue growing from $50B to $100B over 5 years has a CAGR of (100/50)^(1/5)−1 = 14.9% per year.

Why does the oldest year show no growth %?

YoY growth is measured against the prior year. The oldest year in the window has no prior period available, so its growth value is left blank rather than shown as zero.
