Financials earnings calls are structured to emphasize the favorable accounting outcomes that drove the beat. These questions locate the places where presentation diverges from the actual trajectory of the business.

Establish whether the EPS beat came from operating performance or reserve release before concluding it is repeatable

A bank that beats EPS because net interest income, fee revenue, and operating expenses all moved in the right direction has demonstrated operating leverage that can persist. A bank that beats because provision for credit losses was released — because loan losses came in below the allowance — has consumed part of the capital buffer set aside for future losses. Reserve releases are not cash income in any economically meaningful sense; they reflect assumptions about the future credit environment becoming more optimistic. Before the provision release cycle is fully run, it can look like earnings improvement. Once allowances reach the floor management views as adequate, the releases stop and EPS loses a tailwind that was never operating income to begin with.

Build a provision normalization model: take the bank's reported net charge-off rate over the past eight quarters, multiply by average loans, and call that normalized provision. Compare it to what the bank actually expensed. The gap is the release. If the reported EPS beat disappears when you substitute normalized provision for actual, the quality of the beat is lower than it appears.

Test whether net interest margin expansion reflects genuine pricing power or deposit beta lag that will inevitably reverse

Bank NIM expanded sharply from 2022 through 2023 because loan yields repriced immediately to higher rates while deposit costs moved up slowly — the deposit beta lagged the rate cycle. That lag is not permanent. As depositors become more rate-aware, as promotional CD and money market rates attract balances, and as the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates, the deposit cost base catches up to loan yields from below while the loan yield ceiling also drops. NIM that expanded because of deposit lag will compress when the lag closes. The relevant question is not whether NIM expanded but whether the current level is sustainable or represents a temporary peak in the repricing cycle.

Why it matters

Deposit repricing is the most mechanically predictable NIM headwind for most deposit-funded banks through the current rate cycle. It is not speculative — it is the mathematical consequence of deposit costs that are still below equilibrium converging toward market rates as rate cuts make the lag more visible to depositors. Banks that communicated this clearly in prior quarters deserve more credibility than those that consistently surprised to the downside as the repricing played out.

Ask management two specific questions: what percentage of the deposit book is currently below market rates that will reprice in the next four quarters, and what is the bank's deposit beta assumption embedded in forward NIM guidance? A bank that has 35% of deposits still below market and assumes a beta of 0.3 in forward guidance is likely underestimating the repricing pressure. A bank that has already repriced 80% of deposits and is seeing beta stabilize is closer to the NIM floor.

Verify that an insurer's favorable combined ratio reflects underwriting quality, not prior-year reserve development and below-average catastrophes

A property-casualty insurer reporting a combined ratio of 92% in a quarter where catastrophe losses were 1% of premium and prior-year development contributed a favorable 3.5 points has an underlying accident-year combined ratio of roughly 96.5%. That is a very different underwriting result than a 92% combined ratio where cats were at the long-run average and development was neutral. The reported number requires two adjustments before it reflects actual underwriting quality: normalize catastrophe losses to the long-run expected level and strip prior-year development. The resulting accident-year loss ratio on a normalized basis is the most informative measure of whether the insurer is pricing adequately for the risks it is accepting.

Check whether asset manager fee revenue reflects genuine client demand or market appreciation inflating a shrinking asset base

An asset manager can report fee revenue growth in a quarter when markets were up 8% even while experiencing persistent net outflows from clients who are actively choosing to redeem. The market appreciation increases AUM and, correspondingly, fee revenue — but it does not represent new client confidence. Underneath the fee revenue growth, the business is losing clients at a rate that will be visible in fee revenue as soon as markets correct. The only way to distinguish genuine client demand from market-driven AUM growth is to look at net flows: gross subscriptions minus gross redemptions, by product and channel. Persistent net outflows in core products, offset by market appreciation, are not a stable business model.

AUM-based fee revenue is a function of two variables: the level of the market and the amount of client money the firm is actually managing. Investors who focus on fee revenue without decomposing it into market-driven and flow-driven components consistently overestimate the durability of earnings in down-market scenarios. A firm losing 3% of its AUM each quarter through net outflows will experience a 12% decline in AUM in a flat market year — and that decline will accelerate in a declining market year when outflows increase.

On every asset manager earnings call, immediately after reading the AUM and fee revenue lines. Most important when the market has been up materially in the prior quarter, because market appreciation can mask outflow trends for several reporting periods before the cumulative damage becomes visible in year-over-year AUM comparisons.

Build a flow-adjusted fee revenue estimate: take the average AUM from the quarter, apply the effective fee rate, and reconcile to reported fee revenue. Separately, calculate what fee revenue would look like if AUM reflected only net flows and no market appreciation. The gap between the market-appreciating-AUM scenario and the flat-market scenario is the earnings sensitivity to market direction — it should be in the bear case, not the tail.

Assess whether specialty finance and consumer lender charge-off rates reflect current credit quality or are lagging vintage deterioration that is already visible in delinquency data

Consumer and specialty finance lenders report charge-offs on a realized basis — a loan is only charged off when it reaches a defined stage of delinquency and recovery attempts have been exhausted. This means charge-off rates reflect credit decisions made 12 to 24 months ago, not the credit quality of the current portfolio. If a lender relaxed underwriting standards in 2022-2023 to drive loan growth, those decisions flow through as elevated charge-offs in 2024-2025. The leading indicator — visible 12 to 18 months earlier — is vintage-level delinquency performance: how the cohort of loans originated in each quarter is performing relative to prior cohorts at the same age. Ask management to describe the delinquency performance of 2022-2023 origination vintages relative to 2019-2021 vintages at the same stage of seasoning. If the 2022-2023 vintages are tracking worse at 18 months of age than the 2019-2021 vintages tracked at the same age, the charge-off acceleration is coming. If management does not provide vintage-level disclosure, ask what change in underwriting standards or origination mix would explain why current vintages should perform at or above historical norms.

Numbers to reconcile before the quarter is fully understood

The earnings press release is the first draft. These are the financials-specific metrics that test whether the argument holds when you examine the supporting data.

Reconcile tangible book value per share growth against reported earnings to assess true capital generation

Financials are the sector where the gap between reported earnings and tangible book value growth most often reveals information. A bank can report $2.50 of EPS while tangible book value per share grows by only $1.00 — the difference might reflect unrealized losses in the held-to-maturity portfolio, goodwill amortization exclusions, or other comprehensive income charges that reduce book equity without flowing through the income statement. TBVPS growth is the most conservative measure of true economic value creation because it captures all of the items that management can exclude from adjusted earnings. Comparing the two over four to six quarters reveals whether the business is building real capital or showing accounting earnings that are not fully converting into balance sheet strength.

The divergence between EPS and TBVPS growth was most visible during the 2022-2023 rate cycle, when unrealized losses on held-to-maturity securities reduced TBVPS for banks that had invested in long-duration assets before rates rose. On every bank earnings call, as a routine reconciliation before forming any view on the stock's capital return capacity or valuation relative to book. Most important when OCI items have been volatile — rate moves, credit spread widening, or foreign exchange fluctuations all flow through TBVPS without touching reported EPS.

Investor take

Calculate the TBVPS accretion rate: TBVPS this quarter minus TBVPS four quarters ago, divided by TBVPS four quarters ago. Compare it to the annualized EPS yield on the opening TBVPS. If the accretion rate is materially below the EPS yield, the capital generation is less robust than reported EPS suggests. If the accretion rate exceeds the EPS yield, OCI gains or goodwill amortization are contributing positively.

Track the allowance-to-loans ratio trend over four quarters before concluding a bank's credit is improving

The allowance for loan losses as a percentage of total loans is a direct measure of how much cushion the bank is carrying against future credit losses. When the ratio falls — either because the allowance is released or because loans grew faster than reserves — the bank has less buffer. When it rises — because provision expense exceeds charge-offs, or because management is building reserves ahead of expected deterioration — the bank is increasing its cushion. A bank that reports declining NPAs and charge-offs while simultaneously declining its allowance coverage ratio may be releasing reserves ahead of a credit normalization that the delinquency data suggests is still in progress. Track the ratio itself, not just the direction of the provision expense.

Allowance release cycles are more informative when viewed in the context of the current credit cycle stage. Reserve releases that occur when delinquencies are still trending upward are a negative signal. Releases that occur after delinquencies have peaked and are declining are appropriate. Knowing where in the delinquency cycle the bank sits changes the interpretation of the same provision action.

On every bank earnings call, after reading both the provision expense and the allowance balance. Compare the current allowance-to-loans ratio against the ratio at the same point in prior credit cycles and against the ratio at which management has expressed comfort. A bank guiding to a lower allowance-to-loans target in an environment where early delinquencies are rising has an inconsistency that deserves direct questioning.

Investor take

Build an allowance trajectory table: allowance balance, loans outstanding, allowance-to-loans ratio, provision expense, and net charge-offs for each of the past eight quarters. The table will show whether the allowance is being built, maintained, or drawn down. Pair it with the 30-89 day delinquency trend — if delinquencies are rising and the allowance-to-loans ratio is falling, the bank is moving in opposite directions and one of the two will need to change.

Compare the current-year accident-year combined ratio against the prior three years to assess insurer underwriting trend

A single quarter of combined ratio is too noisy to anchor a thesis on insurer underwriting quality. What matters is the trend in the accident-year combined ratio — stripped of cats and prior-year development — over multiple accident years. A P&C insurer whose accident-year loss ratio has deteriorated from 60% in 2021 to 64% in 2022 to 67% in 2023 is experiencing structural underwriting deterioration even if the reported combined ratio has been stable due to favorable cat experience and prior-year development. The accident-year trend is available from the statutory financial supplements that insurers file annually and from the loss reserve triangles in 10-K filings. Building a multi-year accident-year comparison is the most reliable way to distinguish good underwriting from good luck.

Why it matters

Underwriting trend analysis is where the most consequential variant perception in insurance investing comes from, because the reported combined ratio can mask a deteriorating book for two to four years while cats and reserve releases provide tailwinds. Pull the accident-year loss ratios from the statutory filing or investor supplement for the past four years. Calculate the trend — is the ratio improving, stable, or deteriorating? Compare against the company's stated pricing increase trajectory and against reported loss-cost trends. If prices are rising faster than loss costs but the accident-year ratio is still deteriorating, the pricing discipline is insufficient to offset the loss cost inflation the company is experiencing.

Assess return on tangible common equity against the cost of equity before declaring a bank's earnings attractive

Return on tangible common equity is the most useful bank profitability metric because it strips goodwill and other intangibles from the equity base, showing returns on the real capital the bank is deploying. The relevant comparison is not ROTCE in absolute terms but ROTCE relative to the bank's estimated cost of equity — typically 9% to 12% for a money center bank, 10% to 13% for regional banks reflecting higher economic sensitivity and less diversification. A bank generating 14% ROTCE against a cost of equity of 10% is building economic value. One generating 8% ROTCE against a cost of equity of 11% is destroying it even while reporting positive earnings. Banks that trade at premiums to tangible book — above 1.5x TBVPS — should be generating ROTCE comfortably above their cost of equity to justify the multiple. Banks at discounts to book may be reflecting persistent below-cost returns that ROTCE analysis confirms.

ROTCE relative to cost of equity is the fundamental valuation discipline for bank analysis. It ties profitability to valuation in a way that justifies or challenges the multiple being paid. A bank at 2x TBVPS with 10% ROTCE and 11% cost of equity is priced for an economic return that the business is not generating — the multiple will compress unless ROTCE improves.

When initiating or updating a bank position where the P/TBV multiple is above or below 1.0x, and when evaluating management's capital allocation decisions about buybacks versus organic growth investment.

Calculate ROTCE: annualized net income attributable to common shareholders, divided by average tangible common equity. Estimate cost of equity using the capital asset pricing model with a beta appropriate for the bank's earnings volatility relative to the market. The spread between ROTCE and cost of equity tells you whether value is being created at the margin — and whether the current multiple is justified by the economic return profile.

Verify that an asset manager's revenue per dollar of AUM is not compressing faster than reported AUM growth suggests

The effective management fee rate — total fee revenue divided by average AUM — is the most informative single metric for asset manager revenue quality, and it can deteriorate significantly while AUM is growing. Fee rate compression happens through three mechanisms: product mix shift, where lower-fee products (passive, institutional, index) capture a larger share of flows than higher-fee products; client repricing, where large institutional mandates negotiate lower fees as their allocations grow; and structural industry pressure, where competition drives advisory fees downward even on products that remain in demand. Effective fee rate compression is a slow-moving but compounding headwind. A firm that loses 5 basis points of effective fee rate on $500 billion of AUM loses $250 million of annual revenue — and that loss is permanent unless the firm grows into higher-fee products.

Fee rate compression is the structural margin issue for most actively managed asset management businesses. It has been playing out for more than a decade and shows no sign of reversal. Understanding where a specific firm is in the compression cycle — early, middle, or stable — changes the earnings power assessment significantly.

On every asset manager earnings call, after calculating the effective fee rate from total fee revenue and average AUM. Compare it against the prior four quarters and against the prior two years. The trend is more informative than the level — a firm at 45 basis points trending down at 2 basis points per year has a different forward earnings profile than one at 45 basis points that has been stable.

Calculate the fee rate for each major product category separately: active equity, fixed income, multi-asset, alternatives, passive/index. The mix of AUM by product category and the fee rate trend within each category will show whether overall fee rate compression is being driven by product mix shift — which may be partially manageable — or by within-product rate compression — which is harder to address. A firm that is growing AUM in alternatives while losing active equity share is managing the mix shift better than one where all categories are repricing simultaneously.

Credit and capital signals that precede reported deterioration

In financials, the most important forward indicators are not in the press release. They are in the delinquency supplements, reserve triangles, and capital ratio disclosures that management discusses in passing while describing the favorable headline result.

Track 30-89 day delinquency migration as the primary leading indicator of future charge-off pressure

Delinquency stages are sequential: loans move from current to 30-89 days past due to 90+ days to nonperforming to charge-off. The 30-89 day bucket is the first visible indication of stress in a loan portfolio. Because the average time from first delinquency to charge-off is 12 to 18 months for consumer loans and longer for commercial, an increase in 30-89 day delinquencies is a forward signal for charge-off rates that the current-quarter income statement does not yet reflect. Track this metric independently from the headline charge-off figure and compare it against the prior year, not just the prior quarter — seasonal patterns create quarter-to-quarter variation that can obscure the underlying trend.

Why it matters

The 30-89 day delinquency rate is the highest signal-to-noise leading indicator in bank credit analysis. Charge-off rates lag it by four to eight quarters; provision expense lags it somewhat less. Investors who monitor early delinquency migration can anticipate provision reversals before management adjusts guidance.

On every bank and consumer lender earnings call, immediately after the credit quality section of the supplement or Q. Track it quarterly over at least six periods to distinguish seasonal variation from trend changes. Flag any quarter where the 30-89 day rate is more than 15 basis points above the same quarter of the prior year.

Investor take

Build a delinquency migration table: 30-89 day, 90+ day, nonperforming, and net charge-off rates for the past eight quarters. Overlay the seasonal pattern from prior years to distinguish normal variation from genuine deterioration. If 30-89 day delinquencies are rising seasonally-adjusted, model a corresponding increase in NCOs two to four quarters forward and compare the implied provision level against what the bank currently guides.

Assess commercial real estate concentration and mark-to-market impairment risk before accepting CRE book quality at face value

Commercial real estate loan quality is best evaluated at the property type and loan vintage level, not at the aggregate portfolio level. Office CRE has experienced structural demand destruction from hybrid work patterns that has reduced occupancy rates, net operating income, and consequently collateral values by 30-50% in major metros from peak values. A bank with significant office CRE exposure that reports stable criticized loan ratios may have collateral marks that have not been updated since origination, loans that have been modified to extend maturities without recognizing impairment, or borrowers who are current on debt service only because reserves or equity sponsor contributions are subsidizing the payments. The aggregate CRE portfolio quality metric does not distinguish between well-collateralized industrial or multifamily and structurally impaired office.

Why it matters

Office CRE is the most concentrated source of unrecognized credit risk on bank balance sheets through the current cycle, and it is specifically the category where banks have the most discretion about when and whether to recognize impairment given the illiquid nature of the collateral and the lack of forced transactions that would establish market values. Banks with greater than 10% of common equity exposure to office CRE loans deserve specific analysis of collateral values, loan-to-value ratios, and borrower debt service capacity before the portfolio quality is accepted at par.

When it matters

When evaluating any bank with material commercial real estate exposure, particularly in urban office, retail, and hotel categories. Most important when the bank reports stable criticized loan ratios and charge-off rates that appear inconsistent with the known collateral value deterioration in the office market.

Investor take

Ask management two specific questions: what percentage of the office CRE portfolio has had collateral values updated in the past 12 months, and what is the current weighted-average loan-to-value ratio based on those updated appraisals? A bank that cannot answer the second question precisely is either not marking the collateral or is marking it with internal estimates that rely on pre-impairment comparables. Compare the bank's criticized loan ratio to office CRE to the public CMBS default data for office properties in the same metro areas — if the bank's internal criticized ratio is significantly better than the public market data, investigate the discrepancy.

Evaluate insurer reserve adequacy through loss reserve triangle analysis rather than quarterly development alone

Favorable prior-year reserve development — the positive adjustment that occurs when actual losses on prior accident years come in below the reserves set — is the most visible insurer accounting signal, but it is the last stop in a longer process. Loss reserve triangles, published in annual 10-K filings, show the paid loss development pattern for each accident year across calendar years. A reserve triangle that shows consistent acceleration of paid losses in recent accident years — relative to the development pattern of prior years at the same age — is an early signal that the reserve set on current-year policies may prove inadequate even before the company reports adverse development on those years.

Why it matters

Reserve triangle analysis is the most informative long-range view of insurer reserving conservatism. It requires reading statutory financial data or annual reports rather than quarterly press releases, which is why most earnings-focused investors do not apply it. The investors who do apply it can identify companies whose reported combined ratios are benefiting from favorable development that is the delayed release of reserves set conservatively in prior periods — and will eventually run out — versus companies that are genuinely improving underwriting quality.

When it matters

When establishing any position in a P&C insurer where prior-year development has been a consistent positive contributor to reported results. The triangle analysis is most useful done annually, after the 10-K is filed, to update the view of reserve adequacy before the next earnings cycle begins.

Pull the paid loss development triangle from the 10-K Schedule P or investor supplement. Calculate the development factor for each accident year at each calendar year of age. Compare the recent accident-year development factors against the development factors for older accident years at the same age. If recent accident years are developing faster — more paid losses emerging earlier — than older years at the same age, the company may be setting less conservative initial reserves, which reduces the favorable development available in future years.

Check capital adequacy against both regulatory minimums and the capital return targets management has communicated

Financial companies — particularly banks — operate under regulatory capital requirements that define the minimum levels of common equity tier 1 capital, tier 1 capital, and total capital they must hold relative to risk-weighted assets. But regulatory minimums are not the right reference point for assessing capital adequacy; the right reference point is the buffer above minimums that the bank's own stress testing, business risk profile, and capital return commitments require. A bank with a CET1 ratio of 10.2% against a regulatory minimum of 7% has a 320-basis-point buffer — that buffer determines how much capital the bank can return through dividends and buybacks without approaching the regulatory minimum during an economic stress scenario.

Capital return capacity is the mechanism by which bank earnings convert into per-share value. Banks that cannot grow returns on equity must generate attractive per-share returns through buybacks and dividends. The ratio of excess capital to annual return is the capital runway — how many years management can sustain current returns before the buffer becomes thin. Track the net interest income sensitivity to rate changes and match it against management's guidance assumptions

Banks disclose interest rate sensitivity in their 10-K and 10-Q filings — typically as the expected change in net interest income for a 100 or 200 basis point parallel shift in rates. This disclosure is the tool for estimating how much of a bank's NII is a function of the current rate environment versus the sustainable earnings power across a full rate cycle. Banks that are asset-sensitive — meaning their loan book reprices faster than their deposit book when rates change — benefit from rising rates and are hurt by falling rates. Banks that are liability-sensitive benefit from falling rates.
